Fire and… Forget

Kornet-EM multi-purpose long-range missile complex will be among the highlights on the KBP Instrument Design Bureau stand at Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition. Fitted with a jam-resistant automatic beam-riding guidance system, this complex is intended against ground and air targets.

Kornet-EM can engage last-generation ERA-protected tanks, light armor, emplacements, and naval and air targets (e.g. UAVs and helicopters) at ranges of up to  10 km. In terms of cost/efficiency ratio, Kornet-EM far exceeds other air defense complexes of similar range. Its automatic guidance mode realizes the fire-and-forget principle without using costly target-seeking devices in the missile, which greatly reduces stress loads on the operator and makes the weapons less demanding to operator qualification, reducing personnel training time.
One of the advantages of Kornet-EM is the possibility of mounting the complex on a self-propelled platform or building a carried version with tripod mounting. Kornet-EM can be mounted on a wide range of light vehicles (0.8 to 1.5 tons). In double-launcher version, the complex has eight missiles ready to be fired, with a total onboard load of 16 missiles. Volley firing at two targets at once greatly increases the effective rate of fire and firepower of the unit.
The KBP Instrument Design Bureau is one of the leading design and construction organizations in Russia's defense industry. Since 2008, KBP has been part of Rostec State Corporation, being one of the key organizations within the High-Precision Weapons holding. Over its history, KBP has developed and mass-produced over 150 types of weapons and military equipment. Today, KBP is a powerful research and production center, creating state-of-the-art high-accuracy weapons. Current KBP developments feature over 6,000 patented inventions.

Right on Target, Day and Night

At Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition, KBP Instrument Design Bureau will present the B05Ya01 weapons complex for armored vehicles, fitted with a fire control system and the Kornet-E  ATGW.
This module is designed to be fitted on BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as to Russian and international IFVs and APCs. Mounted on the standard chassis, the module provides great firepower with its 30-mm automatic cannon, four launchers for the Kornet-E third-generation ATGW system, an AG-30 30-mm automatic grenade launcher, and a new automated day-and-night fire control system. The total firepower is greater than that of today's best infantry fighting vehicles.

The new weapons complex of the upgraded BMP-2 allows engaging almost any target at ranges of up 8,000 meters, at any time of day, on the move or while floating. The Kornet-E ATGW system is capable of engaging explosive-reactive armored targets, including new-generation battle tanks and fortifications. Besides, this complex can provide continuous fire support for advancing tanks.

Russia's Defense Industry: A Well-Known Stranger

The past and present of Russia's defense industry will be the key topic of Kommersant's latest Business Guide supplement, out on May 30, 2013.

The country's military industry is on the rise now, with the state pumping serious money into arms procurement and production facility upgrades. The legal base for placement and realization of state defense order has been laid down, and relations among players in the industry are becoming more constructive and reasonable. Thanks to all this, the military complex, enormous in Soviet times and shrunk dramatically afterwards, is now finally getting back on its feet.

Sure enough, the industry is still facing plenty of challenges: understaffing, outdated equipment at production and research facilities, and the nearly-depleted legacy of technologies and know-hows inherited from the USSR. However, Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of defense industry, thinks it is time to get down to work, as united efforts by authorities, industrialists, expert community, and the public will help rejuvenate the country's defense industry and take it to an entirely new level.

An article in the Business Guide covering the conference 'Key development issues of defense industry of the Russian Federation' tells the story of Russia's defense industry from the very beginning. BG recollects what the military commission looked like when it all started and what it looks like now.

Peculiarities and plans for the future of Russia's response to DARPA, the Foundation for Advanced Research Projects in the Defense Industry, are covered in an interview with the Foundation's Director General Andrey Grigoryev.
In another article in the latest Business Guide, its authors ask why innovative defense industry centers, whose civilian products are on par with those of foreign competitors, are forced to sell them at lower prices than international competitors.

A special insert in the supplement is dedicated to a milestone event in the industry – Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition. It is taking place this September in Nizhniy Tagil, and preparations are in full swing now to demonstrate the latest achievements of Russia's military industry. RAE-2013 is expected to promote Russian-made military equipment, armaments, and ammunition in the domestic and international markets and boost business ties among military equipment manufacturers and customers all over the world.

Oleg Sienko, Director General of Uralvagonzavod, the General Coordinator of Russia Arms EXPO, tells more about things to be seen at RAE-2013 and key goals of the exhibition. He says that the unique Nizhniy Tagil test range, 52 km long an 7 km wide, unequalled in the world in terms of size and capabilities, will gather the top players in the industry to discuss and evaluate the latest examples of military hardware. The venue's unique properties will help fully showcase combat capabilities of armored vehicles and other units, combining a rich business agenda with a colorful show program. There is even more to come, though. According to Oleg Sienko, work is already in progress to further improve the venue's infrastructure: test tracks and pavilions are being rebuilt, new obstacle courses are being set up, and telecom infrastructure being upgraded. The result: a richer business agenda of the exhibition, and even more spectacular shows for experts and common visitors of RAE-2013.

At Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition, Russia's Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (NIMI) will present its lineup of munitions for tank, antitank, field, and naval artillery.

The oldest manufacturers of this type of munitions in Russia, NIMI will showcase on its stands full-scale mock-ups of 3VBM17, 3VBK16, 3OF36 rounds for 125mm tank guns with armor-piercing, high-explosive, and HEAT projectiles. Also on show will be full-scale mock-ups of 152mm HE shells for 2A65 Msta-B and 2S19 Msta-S howitzers.

For naval artillery, NIMI is bringing 76mm, 100mm, and 130mm rounds in various versions (HE, anti-aircraft, and radio-fused projectiles), capable of destroying ground and naval targets. A full-scale mock-up of a 100mm shell for BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle will surely enjoy special interest of visitors.

The history of NIMI dates back to 1932. The Institute's developments played an extremely important role during World War II; for example, it was NIMI that developed the technologies required for mass production of rockets for the famous
Katyusha multiple rocket launchers.

The Institute has been exporting its products since as early as 1937. Most Soviet- and Russian-made ammunitions in the world have been developed in NIMI. Today, NIMI's specialists are working on new generations of conventional and guided projectiles as well as a number of civilian products including oil transportation equipment.
