In Fire and In Water

At Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition, the Design Bureau of Transport Machinery will present its PTS-4 tracked transporter and the SPM special firefighting vehicle.
Armed forces have always relied on amphibious vehicles; they are used not only by engineer and pontoon units to cross water obstacles, but also by marines and paratroopers. Development of the PTS-4 began in 2009 by appointment of Russia's Defense Ministry, and the vehicle passed state trials in 2011. The new amphibious transport vehicle is expected to be included in the state defense order for year 2014.

The PTS-4 utilizes stock components from current tanks: tracks and torsion bars from the T-80 and clutches and gearbox from the T-72. The vehicle is designed to take across water obstacles artillery systems, infantry fighting vehicles, APCs, tow trucks, cars, personnel, and various cargo. The PTS-4 is powered by an 840-horsepower tank engine; its off-road capability is similar to that of the T-80 tank. With a weight of just over 33 tons, the PTS-4 has very high cargo capacity: 12 tons on land and 18 tons on water, with a top speed of 60 km/h and 15 km/h, respectively.

Another exhibit from the Omsk-based factory will be a special firefighting vehicle designed to fight fires and carry out rescue operations in arsenals, warehouses, and ammunition depots, to clear out passages to fire sites, and to plow fire lines against forest fires. The decision on the need to have such firefighting vehicles at all arsenals, bases, and ammunition depots was taken by the Defense Ministry three years ago, after several cases of munitions exploding in warehouse fires.
The SPM firefighting vehicle was developed and built at Design Bureau of Transport Machinery on the base of the T-72 and T-80 battle tanks for the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation.
With a maximum weight of 60 tons, the SPM is operated by a crew of three, protected inside an airtight and heat-insulated cabin. An 840-horsepower engine allows the SPM to develop a top speed of 40 km/h on paved roads. The machine carries up to 25 cubic meters of water and fire suppressant. Its pumps can throw water and foam to a maximum distance of 100 meters. A unique feature of the SPM is its ability to be operated remotely, ensuring maximum safety of the personnel in extreme situations.

Fire and Power!

At Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition, the Omsk-based Design Bureau of Transport Machinery will present combat vehicles that make up the TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system.
The TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system is designed to provide fire support for infantry and armor and destroying personnel and entrenchments, as well as armor and combat vehicles, in various kinds of offensive and defensive action. The system is used by the CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense) forces of the Russian Army.

The TOS-1A consists of a total of three combat vehicles: the BM-1 launch vehicle and two TZM-T resupply vehicles, all three mounted on a tank chassis.
The BM-1 fires 220-mm unguided rockets from a rotating and tilting platform with 24 launching tubes. An important feature of the BM-1 is its great accuracy and automatic ballistic computer. Depending on the situation, the system can fire single rockets or pairs of rockets from two barrels at once. Full salvo is fired in 6 seconds, and maximum range is 6 kilometers. The machine can be readied to fire at a visible target in 90 seconds from coming to a full stop. Even less time – up to 50 seconds – is required to leave the area after firing.
The tank chassis gives the BM-1 tactical mobility and armor protection on par with those of a tank, and allows the machine to occupy advantageous firing positions quickly. Built-in bulldozer equipment for self-entrenching enhances the system's combat survivability. Manned by a crew of three – commander, gun operator, and driver – the BM-1 is fitted with a collective crew protection system from weapons of mass destruction, including its chemical and nuclear varieties. The BM-1 weighs in at 44.3 tons and develops a top speed of 60 km/h.
The TOS-1A system saw combat as part of the 40 Army in Afghanistan and the Chechen Republic.
The other important part of the combat group is the TZM-T resupply vehicle, which is essentially a set of reloading and unloading devices mounted on a T-72A tank chassis. Its telescope crane lifts up to 1000 kg, and the total loading time is no more than 24 minutes. The TZM-T is equipped with a thermal smoke device capable of setting up a solid smoke screen of up to 250-400 meters.
The TZM-T is manned by a crew of three – commander, operator, and driver. With a weight of 3 tons, it develops a top speed of 60 km/h. It shares its power plant, electric system, and fire extinguishing and WMD protection systems with the BM-1 module, as well as the built-in bulldozer equipment.
The system is built by the Design Bureau of Transport Machinery, part of the Uralvagonzavod Corporation. The Bureau specializes in the design and production of combat and engineering equipment of various types, double-purpose products, equipment for the oil and gas industry, and carbon and manganese castings. Since 1958, upon orders of Russia's Defense Ministry, the Bureau has completed over 85 research and development projects, with over 40 types of armored vehicles accepted by the Armed Forces.

During the session, the Presidium listened to a report on the progress of preparations for the Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013), the IX International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment, and Ammunition, and stressed out the need for all defense enterprises of the Sverdlovsk Oblast to take part in the exhibition. The Presidium also decided that the leading enterprises of the Union will help the Organizing Committee in forming specific sections of the exhibitions, while the Executive Directorate of the Union will help engage as many enterprises of the Ural Region as possible.
A special session of the Board on advertising and exhibition activities of the Union will be held to identify and solve all organizational issues regarding the participation of Sverdlovsk Oblast defense enterprises in RAE-2013.

Established supply connections with Ivanovo and Yekaterinburg textile factories, along with an eye for the latest designs and technologies, allow the management to maintain an efficient production cycle.
Established in 1931, the Serov Mechanical Plant now stands among Russia's top manufacturers of tools and equipment for mining, geological exploration, and oil-and-gas industries. Never resting on its laurels, the plant took a foray into the specific segment of special protective apparel. The sewing arm of the plant was established in 2009, specializing in the design and production of working apparel, camouflaged clothing, sports and outdoor apparel, and bedclothes.

Salutation of Sverdlovsk Region Governor Yevgeny Kuyvashev

Dear participants and guests of the 9th International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment and Ammunition,

Today’s Russia needs an army that is capable of responding appropriately to modern threats. The strength of the Russian army and of Russian weapons needs to lie not in their quantity but in their quality, not in their firepower but in their intellectual supremacy.
The Russia Arms Expo exhibition, which has been staged in Nizhny Tagil since 1999, serves to address this objective. It strengthens the country’s defence capability and is not only a modern exhibition venue but also an excellent testing range, where the boldest and most promising projects can be tested.
It is no accident that the exhibition is growing in prestige year by year among Russian and foreign companies and seeing an increase in its reach and the number of participants. Each exhibition is another step forward in improving special technical equipment and arms and strengthening Russia’s defence capability.
The Russian state’s military power has grown and become stronger on the basis of weapons, guns and tanks made in the Ural region. I am sure that Sverdlovsk Region – the “bastion of the state” – has always been, is now and always will be a strong shield and defender of the Fatherland.
I wish the participants and organisers of the exhibition fruitful work, useful contacts, positive outcomes, and new successes and triumphs in their work to strengthen Russia’s defence and economic might.
